Students have been traipsing in and out of Ed Lavalle's office for 43+ years. They engage in political and philosophical discussions that may or may not alter their grades but certainly challenge their thinking and debating skills.
Whether or not you've sat eyeball-to-eyeball with him yourself, if you are a faculty member at Capilano, you benefited from Ed's wisdom, frankness, and activism. He was here when it all began. He was one of the Faculty Association's founders back in the '70s, making Capilano the first unionized member—Local 1—of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC. Throughout the decades, he has worked endlessly for the membership as president, chief steward, chief negotiator, and guru.
Ed's influence has been mightily felt not just in Vancouver and British Columbia but across the ocean. For many years, Ed mentored colleagues and students alike as he led the European Union study tours for all Canadian universities. With his creativity, legal expertise, and background in the labour movement, Ed infused the program with strength and ingenuity.
But to top the lot, Ed was—and is—a funny guy with a suitcaseful of great stories. Before he retires this term, stop for a visit on Wednesday, December 7, 2:30 – 4 p.m., in LB 322. And if you have a tale of your own to share, contact Cheryl Schraeder in Social Sciences....Read more
Rather than have the CFA's monthly general meeting in December's busy exam period, the executive team thought an end-of-term social-cum-meeting might be more meaningful. To that end, the December meeting will instead be held on November 29, from 11:40 - 12:50 , in LB 322.
In addition to a few business items, there will be finger food, door prizes, music, and some festive puzzles. Mingling? Mandatory. Plan to come and share a few laughs with your faculty colleagues.
If you are a chair, coordinator, or convenor (3Cs), or a steward, please attend one of these two lunch meetings on Tues, Nov 22, 2016: 3Cs, LB 322, 11:40 - 12:50; stewards LB 321, 11:40 - 12:50.
If you are a chair or coordinator, be sure to register for one of the upcoming training sessions. The sessions are 2.5 hours long and will be led by Capilano's Erin Berry, senior human resources advisor, and Joanne Quirk, CFA's chief steward. Because many issues will also be relevant to stewards and convenors, they too are welcome to attend one of the sessions: Tues, Nov 8, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Thurs, Nov 17, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; or Wed, Nov 23, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Send RSVPs to email@example.com by Nov 4, 2016.
Capilano University's new president, Paul Dangerfield, will attend the CFA's next general meeting, Oct 18, in LB 322, 11:40 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Please plan to attend — and bring some good questions with you.
